たまたまこの間、弥勒菩薩の修復作業を見たのですが、やっぱり素晴らしいですね。あの細さやあの微笑みで、空間を占める緊張感とパワーというのはアメリカには存在しない。僕は昔からそうした美に魅かれていたんですが、それを精神的に置き換えて抽象という自分の仕事に取り込んでみたいんです。

I found the magnificence of the statue of the Buddhist saint the other day. We can never find the power and sense of tension in the subtlety of its smile in America. I had been attracted by this kind of beauty since my childhood. I really want to take its spirit into my work of abstraction.
