皆さん、こんにちは。

昨日（2026年4月16日）の読売新聞夕刊の「よみうり寸評」の記事が、4月16日がチャーリー・チャップリンの誕生日だということに関連して、あの有名な映画「独裁者」のラスト6分間の演説ついて言及していました。

以下にその該当部分を引用します。

「137年前のきょう16日に生まれたチャップリンは、今見ても驚くような先見性と普遍性のある映画を製作した。機械化による人間疎外を描いた『モダン・タイムス』は、そのままAIと人間の関係を照射する。『独裁者』のラスト6分間の演説は、侵略や戦闘にかまける現代の指導者にこそ聞かせたい。放浪者が孤児を育てる『キッド』には考えさせられた。」

本記事の中心テーマとしては、映画「キッド」に関連させながら現在捜査中の痛ましい親と子の事件について考えるものなのですが、この記事ではそちらではなく、「独裁者」の中の「ラストの演説」について取り上げます。

まず、ざっくりとこの映画の概要を確認してから「ラストの演説」をご覧いただきます。

本映画は、ナチスドイツのヨーロッパ各地に対する軍事侵攻を批判することを目的に1940年にはまだ世界大戦にはほとんど無関心だったアメリカにおいて公開されたものです。ストーリーとしては、以下のようなものです。

「架空の国『トメニア』で床屋を営むユダヤ人の男（以下床屋）は二等兵として従軍中に、重要な任務を遂行中の士官シュルツを偶然にも助けるが、二人の乗った飛行機が墜落してしまう。二人は救出されるが、床屋は墜落の衝撃で記憶をすべて失ってしまう。その後、トメニアではナチスのヒトラーそっくりの独裁者ヒンケルが自由と民主主義を否定し、国中のユダヤ人を迫害するようになっていく。ユダヤ人である床屋も迫害を受ける。一方で、シュルツはヒンケルの信頼を受け、突撃隊長に出世していた。床屋がユダヤ人と知ったシュルツは、以前助けられた恩から床屋や彼の隣人たちに手を出さないよう命じる。そのようなシュルツはしだいにヒンケルに反対するようになり彼の暗殺計画を立てるが突撃隊に見つかり、床屋と共に強制収容所に送られてしまう。だが、床屋とシュルツはトメニアの軍服を奪い、強制収容所から逃げ出す。ところが、その二人を捜索中の兵士がヒンケルにそっくりな床屋をヒンケル本人だと間違え、シュルツと共に丁重に扱い、逆にヒンケルを床屋と間違えて逮捕してしまう。そして、床屋はヒンケルと間違えられたまま、トメニア軍に占領されたオーストリッチ（こちらも架空の国）の首都へ連れていかれ、大勢の兵士が集う広場で演説を行うことになる。」

当時、世界初の社会権を認めた憲法によって当時世界で最も先進的で民主的な国家とうたわれた「ワイマール共和国」において、民主的な選挙を経て選ばれたヒトラーがナチスの支持を広げ、1933年に首相に就任して独裁体制へ移行し、あの悲劇がおこりました。

長らく世界で最も先進的で民主的な国家であると信じられてきたアメリカにおいて、同じく民主的な選挙にて選ばれたトランプ大統領が世界の混乱を自ら進んで起こしているように見える現状が、当時のドイツの状況に重なって見えてしまいます。

記事の中で、「侵略や戦闘にかまける現代の指導者にこそ聞かせたい。」という言葉がありましたが、本当にその通りだと思いました。

「歴史は繰り返す」

という言葉が現代には当たらないことを祈るばかりです。

I don’t want to rule or conquer anyone.
I should like to help everyone if possible, Jew, gentile, black man, white.

We all want to help one another, human beings are like that.
We all want to live by each other’s happiness, not by each other’s misery. We don’t want to hate and despise one another.
In this world there is room for everyone and the earth is rich and can provide for everyone.

The way of life can be free and beautiful. But we have lost the way.
Greed has poisoned men’s souls has barricaded the world with hate, has goose-stepped us into misery and bloodshed.

We have developed speed but we have shut ourselves in, machinery that gives abundance has left us in want.
Our knowledge has made us cynical our cleverness hard and unkind.

We think too much and feel too little,
more than machinery we need humanity,
more than cleverness we need kindness and gentleness,
without these qualities, life will be violent and all will be lost.

The aeroplane and the radio have brought us closer together.
The very nature of these inventions cries out for the goodness in men, cries out for universal brotherhood for the unity of us all.
Even now my voice is reaching millions throughout the world, millions of despairing men, women and little children,
victims of a system that makes men torture and imprison innocent people.
To those who can hear me, I say “Do not despair”.

The misery that is now upon us is but the passing of greed,
the bitternessof men who fear the way of human progress,
the hate of men will pass and dictators die,
and the power they took from the people will return to the people,
and so long as men die, liberty will never perish

Soldiers, Don’t give yourselves to brutes
men who despise you and enslave your lives,
tell you what to do, what to think and what to feel,
who drill you, diet you, treat you as cattle, as cannon fodder

Don’t give yourselves to these unnatural men, machine men, with machine minds and machine hearts.
You are not machines. You are not cattle.
You are men.
You have the love of humanity in your hearts.
You don’t hate, only the unloved hate. Only the unloved and the unnatural.
Soldiers! Don’t fight for slavery, fight for liberty.

In the seventeenth chapter of Saint Luke it is written “the kingdom of God is within man” –
not one man, nor a group of men – but in all men – in you, the people.

You the people have the power, the power to create machines, the power to create happiness.
You the people have the power to make life free and beautiful, to make this life a wonderful adventure.

Then in the name of democracy let’s use that power – let us all unite.
Let us fight for a new world,
a decent world that will give men a chance to work, that will give you the future and old age and security.

By the promise of these things, brutes have risen to power, but they lie.
They do not fulfil their promise, they never will.
Dictators free themselves but they enslave the people.

Now let us fight to fulfil that promise.
Let us fight to free the world, to do away with national barriers, do away with greed, with hate and intolerance.
Let us fight for a world of reason, a world where science and progress will lead to all men’s happiness.
Soldiers! In the name of democracy, let us all unite!
