English book recommendations

Students often ask me for English book recommendations, so I’d like to talk about one of the books I recommend most frequently: The Giver, by Lois Lowry.
I first read The Giver when I was a child, and it’s been one of my favourite books ever since. It takes place in the future, and tells the story of a boy named Jonas, who lives in a perfect society with no war, violence or pain. I would recommend this book to students of any age or reading level, because it tells an interesting story using simple, clear language. It also deals with many thought-provoking questions and big ideas: How important is free will? What is the price of knowledge? Can happiness exist without pain?
Most importantly, though, The Giver is just a wonderful story that can be enjoyed by anyone. I love it just as much now as when I first read it, and I hope you will too.
